Nineteen Fifty-Six Magazine was created at the University of Alabama to celebrate and highlight Black culture, Black excellence, and Black student experiences at the University of Alabama. The magazine is named after the year 1956, when Autherine Lucy Foster, the first Black student, was allowed to enroll at the University of Alabama.

As the founding Creative Director, with 6 published issues under my direction, 1956 was able to sustain a brand identity and continue to thrive on a competitive campus for student media.

To mark the launch of Nineteen Fifty-Six Magazine's inaugural issue, I created portraits honoring trailblazing African Americans who achieved groundbreaking integration at the University of Alabama and set records as pioneers in their fields. The portraits feature Vivian Malone Jones, Dianne Kirskey, James Hood, and Wendell Hudson.
